October Fishing on Guntersville
With the best of the fall just around the corner I thought I would give you some tips on what to expect during the month of October. The first place to start is for you to understand what changes the lake will go through over this month. First and foremost the water temperature will drop into the 60's and that will create a feeding frenzy over the 30 day period.
The grass mats will get foamy and nasty looking, turning brown and splitting the grass mats up all over the lake. You will see floating grass in big bunches as the wind rips the grass away. As you visualize these changes it will offer you opportunities to catch bass in ways that may be quite different than any other time of year. The first bait that should produce will be the old hollow body frog or rat. Fishing these over those nasty brown grass mats will be a lot of fun. If the rat bite isn't productive take those same holes in the grass and pitch heavy jigs into them. If the bass aren't working on top then you can bet they will be stacked into the open areas and you'll just have to get to the bottom to catch them.
The most fun you could have will probably come by catching bass on small size crank baits, the bite is generally fierce. You can have days out there where you could catch over a 100 fish a day and you will catch all sizes from small this year's crop or spawn to some monsters. If you have a young child that you always wanted to get to the lake when the action was strong enough to keep their interest then this could be the bait and time to do it. Lastly top water baits like pop-r or buzz baits will produce all day long, bright sun and all the bass will be feeding getting ready for the winter and striking anything that moves.
Get ready the fun is about to begin!
