Proper Flipping and Pitching Equipment & Technique
With the grass showing it's head on top in some areas of the lake, the need to properly flip and pitch and be set up correctly can be a difference maker. Just as all the fishing industry has improved in technology the equipment for flipping and pitching has taken a big turn upward in technology.
Point being just purchasing any flipping rod or reel can severely limit or discourage you from trying flipping. One of the biggest factors in catching fish and enjoying this technique is having a light, sturdy long rod. Flipping is 100% wrist action; you must rely on the rod for leverage and the pendulum swing of the bait and it must do the work not you! A heavy flipping rod can just totally destroy the action and wear your wrist out; hence making you dislike what is really a fun technique.
One important key to making a productive day on the water while flipping is learning to produce a silent entry into the water with your bait. I cannot stress this enough if your bait is loud it's not going to catch fish. Also, since we are generally fishing around the grass and it is generally murky and icky grass areas that you fish using big highly visible baits with loud rattles is my choice of baits. I like black and blue, red and or craw-fish colors with red in them as my choice of colors.
Lastly your thumb is a key part of the fall of the lure into the water; you want the bait to fall as vertical as possible. So the feathering of the spool to ensure that the bait drops without a lot of pressure to restrict the bait so it doesn't pull away from the target is key in catching fish. Rigging, accuracy and proper drop will make a big difference toward enjoying this fishing technique.
