Can Restocking Guntersville Become a Viable Alternative?
After almost a year now of working to come up with ideas that will ensure the continued improvement of Lake Guntersville, listening to several biologist talk about the difficulty of restocking I have formed an opinion. My opinion, my thoughts and my conclusion is that regardless of the negative results biologists have restocking large impoundments I still believe we need to move forward on restocking plans.
I believe that there are just as many positive results as there are negative results. The rewards in my mind outweigh the negatives and the possibility of enhancing the lake with restocking has many possibilities that could help our lake. First of all, it has been proven in other parts of the country that timing is everything when it comes to restocking; if the lake is restocked every year at the end of the spawn the fingerlings have a much greater chance of surviving. The fingerlings actually group up with the new births of bass and together this teaches them to survive from the predators that would normally kill them off at other times of the year.
There are also other rewards from restocking that could improve the lake, first of all if the lake was restocked with Florida strain bass the results could improve the size and longevity of the native bass in Guntersville. There has been results proven that the Florida strain bass do in fact mix genetically with the local strain in other parts of the country and produce long term a bigger bass that would offer positive results for Guntersville. Lastly there is several ways that fingerlings can be raised. Texas, Lake Fork has restocked with fingerlings that have been enhanced with hormone improvement drugs that cause the fingerlings to grow faster and hence pure size from fast growth has proven successful in Texas. The faster the fingerlings grow the more chance they have of surviving, and Texas has proven they can be successful by stocking these enhanced bass.
Restocking is a viable solution for Guntersville and the faster we do some restocking the faster we will get back to the best of the bass fishing for Guntersville!
