Retrieve Presentations for Top Water Fishing
Over my many years of guiding one of the most common misunderstanding about fishing top water is that most fisherman do not use different speeds and movement for their top water baits. They fish them all alike; hence they get the same results with all their different top water baits. I propose you try several different ways of retrieving your baits, and watch the movement of the bait because a little thought will go a long ways. The BASS or FLW Pro's always look for ways to make a retrieve different no matter the bait, and top water baits are no exception.
Most people ask well how can you make a buzz bait do different things; I say just watch the bait, burning it makes it skim the top and make more noise, and depending on the manufacturer the buzz bait changes noise volume as well as type of sound. Slowing buzz baits down so it just stays on top makes it look different and reduces noise. I also work it with a stop and go action many times that slight drop over the grass makes a following fish strike it. The tip of your rod position also changes how the bait reacts in the water. The higher the tip the more speed you can get the lower the tip changes the amount of water it displaces and makes it look different from under the water.
The principle I am referring here can be applied to any top water bait, from a pop-r to a spook, changes in the retrieve changes the bait. The Zara Spook is one of the most versatile top water baits ever made. Just changing the position of the tip while you're walking the bait changes it drastically; the tip position drops the rear of the bait or flattens it and makes it appear different from under the water, as well as changes the movement over the water. Where a hip tip produces long extended walking of the bait and dropping it makes it quicker.
Make some changes to your retrieves and watch you will catch more fish!
