In a word, the sailfish bite off of Ft Pierce Inlet in December and January 2010 has been "OUTSTANDING" !
Double digit releases have been the norm for both live and dead bait tournament boats all season long and a dozen or more release flags have adorned many an outrigger over the course of the last six or seven weeks.
In fact, word on the street has it that you no longer need to go to Mexico or the Carribean to experience an outrageous sailfish bite. The Treasure Coast has it all for you right here in Florida.
It could be argued that it' is only the elite fishing crowd in their 60 plus foot custom Jim Smith, Buddy Davis, Garlington or
Rybovich's that has the wherewithall to make 'double digit' sailfishing a reality, but if one take's a closer look at this year's tournament fleet, you will find some very successful boats in the 35'-45' range, including several charter boats fishing out of Ft Pierce City Marina and points south.
For that matter, the winner of this years Pelican Yacht Club Invitational was "Lo Que Sea" with Ft Pierce native Kevin Paul leading the charge as captain and Ft Pierce local, Capt Glen Cameron on the"Floridian", winner of the overall tripple crown of sailfishing the Treasure Coast Classic, holding their own against larger private boats in the60 to 80 feet plus range. Both these boats are available for charter out of the Fort Pierce City Marina and can put you on some serious sailfish when the time is right!
Moving into the last week of January we are still seeing large numbers of sailfish east of Ft Pierce. Double digit catches continue to be commonplace. Even though the fish are moving south this time of year, brisk south and southwest winds have pushed the sailsseveral miles to thenorth of our Inlet on a regular basis throughout January.
Conditions look good for the 'big bite to continue on for some time before their annual migration eventually moves the bulk of the sailfish down past south Florida andlocal emphasis shifts to a great cobia and mahi mahibite in spring and early summer fishing. There will still be scattered sail bites throughout the year but the glory days will be gone until next December brings the big bite back again! ...........Don't miss it !
Tight Lines,
Capt Tris
