The Ideal Bass Boat
As most my readers know I change boats every year; I am part of the Ranger Pro Staff Program and every season my previous boat is sold and I am blessed to get a new one. Over the many years I have been doing this I believe I have developed many thoughts and understanding of what makes a bass boat meet the needs of most fisherman.
So I thought I would give you all my readers my ideas on bass boats, what to look for and what are musts to have. First let me say I am not big on speed but a powerful boat makes a big difference if you are ever caught out on a wide lake in a big wind. I always fully power a boat, in other words if the boat is rated for up to a 250hp then that is what I power it to. The reason is safety not speed, in heavy waves having the power it takes to stay on top of big waves is a must!
The next thing is length, if you are using a bass boat several times a year the chance of being caught in bad weather is pretty high. Therefore, the length of a boat has a lot to do with how smooth of a ride you get in heavy waves. A bass boat must be able to stay on top of the waves and if it is short it will easily drop between them, and that is rough and dangerous. So you should look to buy a boat that has some length, at least all you can afford. Along with length width also makes a difference, look for the widest of deck space not only for fish-ability but also for ride and comfort.
As bass fisherman we all carry many fishing rods, they are important, expensive and necessary for bass fishing and a bass boat must be equipped properly. Rod holders, and rod space must secure your rods under the deck and give them some separate individual rod space or they get damaged; most fisherman today are using rods up to 8 ft in length, so make sure your rod space accommodates your longest fishing rod. There are many other key needs for a bass boat, but these few should get you started!
