The Jig Bite Couldn't Get any Better
Over the 30 plus years I have been fishing Lake Guntersville, I do not recall any year that the bass have hit a jig better than this 2011 fishing season. I have a boat full of different baits, I have sponsors with great baits for all kinds of fishing and conditions, but the year so far has come down to fishing Tight-Line jigs. This mid Size Company out of Cullman Alabama has made my year 2011 one of the best I have ever been part of. The bass just will not hit anything else for me but a Tight-Line jig period.
I am a believer that the fish are attracted to baits in cycles, one year it's a worm another year it's a crank bait this year has been all about Tight-Line jigs. I also believe that the life cycle of some of the new technology in baits runs high for a couple of years; everybody buys the hottest new bait, fishes them to death and then the bass won't hit it. The difference in traditional baits like jigs and worms are they always work it may not occur every year but one of the two will be hot every year and this year it's the jig.
I do believe the jig bite is hot for a reason and I think it's the weather! We have had a lot of rain, a lot of wind and so far the water temperature has been relatively cool. It has stained the water color, as it has been muddy or milky looking all spring. These three factors coupled with muddy water have prevented the grass from growing and the fish are not hanging in the open grass flats as they have in so many past years. We have also had so much rain that the water levels have remained high all spring; this moves the bass off some of the traditional flats also. They are on rocks and wood, areas where crawfish traditional hang out, areas where they can feed and move to cover other than milfoil or hydrilla. This is the year of the jig bite and for me it's all about Tight-Line jigs out of Cullman Alabama.
