Guntersville is slowly becoming an aging lake, and we are starting to show some very definite signs throughout the lake from this! As the reservoir ages there are some fishing tips that make sense, and me like others have to adjust.

First and foremost there are some very definite signs of aging on Lake Guntersville, the wood cover is gradually disappearing, and the islands and banks are eroding away by current and waves. The last couple of years the grass proliferation is disappearing, or changing and I believe its lake aging that is causing some of the problem. Part of the problem is we have had so much rain that it has actually accentuated the problem with erosion, coupled with lack of water clarity to allow the sunlight to help the grass grow in the early part of the year.

There are however, some fishing tips for this aging issue that can help you find bass on any of the older reservoirs. The first thing I do is start fishing the long points, humps and roadbeds with deep diving crank baits, bass generally stack up in these areas on aging lakes. When the bass start to lose the structure they have been use to stacking up on they have a tendency to stay with the baitfish more and more. Finding the baitfish in the past few years has been a very good pattern and is a typically pattern for this problem.

Another occurrence that we are seeing more and more of is suspending fish, bass suspend more and more as a lake ages. The newest technology in drop shot fishing, the Secret Weapon Lure Recoil rig, baited with a Go 2 Bait Shakie Head 4 or 7-inch worm allows you to catch these suspending fish. The recoil rig is the latest in technology in drop shot fishing and it allows you to shake and wiggle and attract the suspending fish. The Go 2 Baits Shakie worm is just different enough with the triangle point tail and unique hand poured system to cause the rig to look and act different than any other bait on the market. The hand pouring takes over an hour to dry and causes a different density and hence a different action with the bait.
