The Winter Jig Bite is Near
As we near the end of the cold and wintry weather, I start to see that there is a mix of patterns that will catch fish. The old timers like me that are looking for that big bite and have the patience to fish for just a few bites a day; we turn to a jig. Now with the onset of the football head jig I believe the chances of the big bite increases. No one makes a better jig to me then Tight-Line jigs, there newest football head stands on end when fished on hard bottoms, they emulate a crawfish as well as I seen and folks they just plain catch bass.
The key to the winter jig bite is patience and productive water, if you head to those long deep points that drop from 10 to 30 feet they all have stumps and hard shell bottoms and are just ideal locations for crawfish to hang out and the big bass to be with them. Also, at the 7 to 9 foot depth fishing these deep points there is generally old milfoil still green on the bottom, and this is ideal water for bass to move back and forth and ambush crawfish in the late winter.
The presentation of a football jig is also key to getting a bite, sometimes I find that the drop and retrieve technique is not sufficient enough to get bit. Many times you have to just drag the jig on the bottom by just slightly pulling the jig toward you keeping the pole tip pointed down toward the water. I also believe that the sun light or lack of it on a cold winter day has a lot to do with the presentation, as the sun being out allows you to move the bait quicker and bounce it more than drag it.
Winter jig fishing is always a great way to find that big fish during the late winter; and Guntersville is a great place to do it!
