Every year we try to find a new lure; something the fish haven't seen a lot of. Well as the bite turns tougher into the summer months, I suggest you dig out your jigging spoons. It's probably the newest of the old baits to be revived, there bigger and have more color than before. They also are heavier than the past, but they are proving to be great fish catches. Just ask Kelly Jordan as he just buried his opponent in the 2007 Ultimate Match Contest. He got into a deep hole on the edge of a point and put together a stringer over 20 pounds in the last 10 minutes of the contest like has never been seen before. He did it with a 5-inch jigging spoon of over an ounce in weight throwing it out off a point like a traditional jig and working it back to his boat. He basically figured out a depth that the bass were suspending in, counted it down to the proper depth and jigged it back to the boat, getting hit faster than anyone would ever imagine. His jigging spoon was bright colored, heavy in nature and had a big sharp treble hook on the end.
In Guntersville I know we are constantly trying to find baits that we can use over the grass well the jigging spoon is also versatile enough to use around grassy points. The key is not to let it get to the bottom, use a count down method or use it on deep enough areas that the grass isn't an issue. It's a simple bait with an easy presentation and it catches fish. The only tough part is generally feeling the bite, but if you use a hard erratic jigging motion you will hook a fish on your action alone, and eliminate the need for feeling the bite.
The jigging spoon is amazing versatile bait, you just have to try to realize how good it really is!Fish Lake Guntersville Guide Servicewww.fishlakeguntersvilleguideservice.comEmail: bassguide@comcast.net256 759 2270Captain Mike Gerry
