Artificial Reefs
The month of September marks the beginning of changing times. You might not notice it getting cooler or anything like that, but changes down under are taking place. During this time we start to get the best of two worlds, which is a potential top water as well as a bottom bite.
With all this being said, I suggest still trolling, but if you happen to see something holding near the bottom I suggest giving it a quick try. For those that don't want to bother with taking any sort of bottom bait such as squid you have options. Don't worry about taking any real bottom bait.
Your first option is to take some Berkley Gulps along. It doesn't matter whether they are shrimp or fish patterns. However, they need to be impregnated with some sort of scent. You are not going to use them whole. It's best to cut them in small pieces and put them on your hook. This will catch you a bottom fish without any problem. You can then fillet the caught fish up and use it as bait.
Your second option is to use the stomach wall of any fish that you have in your fish box. If you have Spanish or King mackerel, little tunny, or barracuda all will work. Just cut the stomach walls out with your knife taking both sides at the same time and you will have plenty of bait. After all you were planning on cleaning the fish anyway. So therefore this removal doesn't affect the meat what so ever. You can cut this into strips or chunks. Stomach wall lasts a long time on the hook and bottom fish love it!
Your third option is to use anything from you lunch that will stay on your hook. It doesn't matter if it's steak, bologna, or ham it also will work. I can't tell you how many times my father forget his bait.
