One of our regulars Doug paired up with Richard to float the bow with us. This was Richard's first bow trip but Doug has been out with us three times this year already. We did another super early start. We started at 6am to try and get out there ahead of the heat. It was in the 30's again today so we were trying to get off the water before it got too too hot. Doug loves to streamer fish so he started the day streamer fishing. Richard had never fly fished before so we started him nymphing with the indicator. Richard got into fish pretty early, he had hooked probably a dozen fish and we hadn't moved many fish on that streamer. Doug knows that streamer fishing isn't necessarily about numbers; it's about that one big fish and the take. He loves the way they take on a streamer but given how well the nymphing was working and the fact that the fish weren't taking those streamers, he switched over and started nymphing as well. After he started nymphing he was getting into fish right away too and then both the guys were into fish through the afternoon. We hit one nice mid river shelf that Doug got a gorgeous rainbow and absolutely slammed his flies and he hooked two other fish going down it. So we walked the boat all the way back through the top of the run and went through it a second time and then picked up fish that time too. It was nice, nice to see the fish still feeding that aggressively. Once it started to get really hot in the afternoon the fish has started to slow down. Doug tried streamer fishing again later in the after noon cause I wasn't blowing in a bunch of dirty water. The highwood river was blowing in dirty water and so we tried fishing that mud line with the streamers and didn't pick up any fish on the streamers so we went back to nymphing and got some more fish on nymphs by the end of the day. Unfortunately it wasn't the best day for streamers like Doug had hoped but in the end we got some really nice fish, got quite a few fish. Richard had a heck of a day, hooked a lot of fish, some really nice fish for his first day ever fly fishing. When you get a guy who can land over a dozen fish before lunch on the first day he's ever fly fished- that's always a good thing
