Fishing along Florida's Space Coast has been consistent reports Captain Keith Mixon of Lakeland (www.mixinworkwithplay.com). During the past week, several redfish have been willing to bite both artificial and fresh dead baits when fished near the bottom. At first light, Nemire's ½ ounce Spin Ripper has enticed several slot size reds into biting. Retrieving this lure just above the grass flats near pot holes and drop offs is the key for a successful hookup. In addition, cut bait such as a fresh dead lady fish has worked well along steep drop offs in four feet of water. This has been especially true in the southern end of the Banana River, south of S.R. 404 along the western shoreline.
In addition, catch and release spotted seatrout have not been able to resist small top water lures when fished in four feet of water or less. Many of these fish have been striking at Storms ¼ ounce Rattlin Chug Bug (color 1351) when fished slowly during calm conditions. The western shoreline of the Banana River has provided plenty of explosive top water action just after first light. The average length of these fish has been sixteen inches with an occasional larger fish. According to the FWC, spotted seatrout has a closed season throughout our waters during the months of November and December.
