The water temps dropped into the 40's again on Sunday morning and the fish SHUT DOWN completely. Yesterday Sunday we caught a grand total of two bass on a 10 hr trip and this was a shiner fishing trip. I have the same clients Jim S and son Patrick S from LA fishing Sunday, Thursday, and Wednesday, and this is not the way you want a 4 day trip to start with first time clients. If I told these two great guys once I told them a thousand times that the fish were in the places we were fishing but the water was just to cold for them to bite. Today {Monday} started off the same way. At 12 pm we had two fish. We started watching the water temps climb into the mid 50's at 1 pm and I told these guys watch what happens from now until we stop fishing.
We had been fishing in the same area all morning and at 1:30 pm the water temps it 56 degrees and it was like a switch turned on. In the next two hours, without moving the boat, Jim and Patrick caught three bass over 8 pounds, and six fish between 5 and 7.5 pounds. We lost a monster that jumped and came unhooked.
It's hard for most fisherman from other states to understand that these FL Bass will not bite when we have a big drop in water temps like we had this week. The water temps dropped 22 degrees in two days. When I get up two mornings in a row and have to scrape ICE off my truck windows, you can take my word that the fishing in not going to be good during the morning hours on these days. But if you will wait them out until the afternoon, great things can happen.
