A combination of extremely hot weather and severe thunderstorms has made fishing in Beach Haven a challenge for the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association.
Captain John Lewis of the "Insatiable" out of Beach Haven had the Lou Torries party out to the canyons looking for tuna. Due to cloud cover, there were no current water temperature reports, and he had to explore. After looking around the Wilmington Canyon with no luck, they moved 20 miles south and found a temperature break. They managed to go 3 for 3 on yellowfin tuna in the 50-60 pound class.
Captain John said the highlight of the trip was Lou's sister Mickie catching the largest tuna to celebrate her birthday. Mickie is an avid angler who is recovering from a stroke. This was her first canyon trip, and it was a good one. According to Captain John, "Mickie is one tough lady."
The "Miss Beach Haven" with Captains Frank Camarda and Brant Whittaker found the fluke were not biting at the inshore reefs like they had been just a few days ago. According to Mate Sal Rosa they managed to boat some fish, but not at the pace they wanted. He feels now that the thunderstorms seem to have cleared, the full moon phase has passed, and the current is slowing down, the bite will improve drastically. Recent pool winners were Scotty from Beach Haven, John the "Cheeseman" from Manahawkin, and the "beautiful Linda."
