These warmer than normal temps and higher than normal rains have contributed to making this January one of the best fish catching winters I've seen in my 17+ years of guiding. February is usually much better than January. I'm getting excited! I've sunk numerous Crappie brush piles this winter and they're already holding fish.

BASS
Notes on Action: Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass are being readily caught. Reports of 50 fish days with the best 5 going 29Lbs are accurate.
What to Use: Big Lucky Craft jerk baits in tablerock shad color is one of my favorites this time of year. 200 and 300 Series Bandit crankbaits in chartreuse and natural shad colors are also productive The good ole shaky jig with a green pumpkin trailer will always catch bass. The biggest rage this winter for catching bass has been the Umbrella 5-swim bait rig. I've been experimenting with this technique and have found it very productive, but I would still prefer to catch bass on lighter tackle and one lure for the enjoyment of the fight and casting. If you'd like to try this new Umbrella rig I'm geared up to do it and would be happy to take you.
Where to Fish: Ledges at the mouths of bays, mainlake and secondary points and deeper rocky banks are producing.
CRAPPIE
Notes on Action: The Crappie bite has been good all winter and should only get better this next month.
What to Use: Mike Romano at Kenlake Marina (270-474-2213), handed me a few tube jig bodies the other day and told me to try 'em. I put this white glow tube on a 3/32 oz jig head with a #4 Long John hook from Fisherman's Friend (270-362-4323) and went fishing. The Bluegill, Red Ear, Yellow Bass, and Bass were all over it! I experimented with other colors but found this color to be much preferred by the fish so I went back to Mike and got some more tubes.
Where to Fish: Brush piles from 12' to 25' on the main lake and in the bays.
BLUEGILL
Notes on Action: Great action can be found right now!
What to Use: 1/32 oz jig tipped with a waxworm, small spoons or a small jigging Rapala will get 'em.
Where to Fish: 10' to 15' deep along the seconary channel around wood cover.
White Bass, Yellow Bass & Striped Bass are also available this time of year.
If you haven't already heard...the Eggner Ferry Bridge that crosses KY Lake was struck by a cargo ship last night, collapsing part of the bridge. Luckily no one was injured. I'm all for more structure in the lake but this is rediculous! This will be a big hardship on our area, but I do believe things happen for a reason and somehow something good will come of this.
