The Redfish bite in Tampa Bay has been awesome. There is a early push of huge Redfish into the Tampa Bay Waters. Usually we get a big push of these type of fish a little later in the year but for some reason this year is defilently different.
On a recent trip I had we landed several nice sized redfish. The smallest being 24 inches and the biggest 35 1/2 inches. I was very surprised to see that big of a fish this time of year. Usually the fish are with in the 18-27 inch slot slimt with an occasional 28-29 incher mixed into the bag, but a 35 1/2 inch was very surprising.
These fish are very healthy are fat. The 35 1/2 inch fish weighed approx. 18-20 lbs. We thought we had a big black drum on until we saw it up closer. The fished weighed so much it broke my landing net.
The trick is that I have found is usuing some sort of cut bait to really get the big girls. I prefer to use frozen cut ladyfish for two reasons.
One they are on about any flat you go on in Tampa Bay and very easy to catch. And for two I like to freeze them and cut them up into chunks. When they are frozen and cut into chunks I can throw them a mile. As the bait is thawing out its releasing more and more of the scent trail in which the big redfish key on.
The big reds have shown up so get out and Catch some.
