Add a bit of rain in summer to low water and what happens? Big Smallmouth!

Most of the big smallmouth have been holding in deeper water due to the low water levels.

However, yesterday we had some late afternoon and evening storms. Although the storms did not raise the water level, they did drop enough water to increase the current. This increased current was enough to put the big smallmouth on the move. Plastics were the ticket on these big fish.

The excellent topwater bite continues on the river, as the Vollmers' from O'Fallow Illinois found out. They love to fish topwater, and thesmallmouth cooperated. We are fishing weeds early in the day and switched over to current and rock later in the day.

Use a slow Pop & Pause. A fast continues action has been seeing few strikes, since the smallmouth are sucking it in on the pause.
