Bigfish II Charters out of Marshfield, MA has had a spectacular week of school bluefin tuna fishing on Stellwagen Bank. All of our charters this week scored on school and medium sized bluefin tuna with most fish ranging from 60 lbs. to 210 lbs. Most trips were combination trips combining 1/2 tuna fishing with either 1/2 cod/haddock or 1/2 striped bass and blues. IF YOU NEVER CAUGHT A 100 to 250 LB. BLUEFIN TUNA ON STAND-UP 50 LB. TACKLE IT HAS NEVER BEEN BETTER THAN RIGHT NOW in my 30 years of fishing on Stellwagen Bank.
The Tripp Curtiss party of Norwalk, Ct. caught 8 school tuna keeping the three legal fish of 174 lbs., 91 lbs. and 60 lbs. They also caught limits of striped bass at Race Pt. at Provincetown.
The Arthur Neddar party of Glastonbury, Ct. had 5 nice tuna keeping 3 fish at 124 lbs., 85 lbs. and 65 lbs. and also got their limit of striped bass 36" to 40".
The John Falls party of Niagara Falls, N.Y. had a great day cod/haddock fishing with cod to 25 lbs., lots of nice haddock and a couple of big wolffish.
Most of the tuna were caught on squid bars, but some were also taken on poppers with heavy spinning tackle. Big schools of surface breaking tuna are now being observed off the backside of the Cape making it possible to cast spinning gear at these fish.
The striped bass were taken on bucktail jigs or embella rigs from Wood End to the Race off of Provincetown on Cape Cod. The cod, haddock and wolffish were all caught on clams east of Stellwagen Bank in 250 to 300 feet of water.
