Blue Water Fishing Report

"Just Teasin!"

Captain "Little" Tommy Williams along with Drew Zeigler and crew took that hot August ride to the blue waters of the stream last week. The ride was simple and direct. Captain Tommy's plan was to go to the Deli Ledge, work it, work it, and work it some more. The main thing about Gulf Stream fish especially at this time of the year is to develop a plan and try to stick with it. Quit often those that do go a "streaming" spend more time riding and looking than they do fishing. However, if you must do a lot of riding I suggest pulling some high-speed lures as you go! It normally produces some interesting hits!

For those interested in getting some information on some "tried and true" high-speed lure check out this web site:

Once this blue water crew arrived at the Deli Ledge, lines were set, and they looking began. The spread pulled was the "old style" that I am the most familiar with, which consist of Ilander lures and rigged ballyhoo. For some reason I just can't leave those Ilander lures behind when I make that blue water run. They are tried, true, and dependable!

According to Captain Tommy all Ilander lures worked and color wasn't such an issue on this particular fish day. Baits were pulled at different depths with "no particular pattern" in regards to where the lures should be placed! In other words, "The Deli ledge and areas around it were holding the attention of deep holding fish."

The ledge didn't look too promising. There weren't any rips to speak off and not much weed to work. However, as you all know a ledge is a ledge is a ledge! Captain Tommy developed a trolling pattern and stuck to it! He fished the ledge and worked from 200 to 250 feet of water. The fish catching scoreboard ended up like this: 5 Wahoo 20 to 40 pounds, 1 black fin tuna 25 pounds, 1 king mackerel 30 pounds

All fish were caught while using monofilament leader opposed to wire. Although some real large fish were lost attentions were had mostly by monofilament leaders. It's amazing how something so simple as leader material can make your fish day!

Freshies Suggestions!

Back in the old days there were some freshwater fishermen that preferred artificial over bait. The good news is that they didn't have to "do any digging, snaring, or fouls odors! It was all about what the fishermen thought in regards to the jig/lure that they were going to be using. They had to trust it, feel like it was going to work, and come up with a personal jigging design. The most used lure that I can remember used then is still popular now is the "Hopkins's Lure." It was a simple metal style jig, which carried a treble hook in tow! All you had to do was purchase weight size preferred, tie directly on main line, cast or just drop it, and work it! Now how much simpler can you get from that! I had a customer tell me one time that if he was ever stranded on a deserted island and he could pick one lure to have it would be the old Hopkins! Now you know the rest of the story!
