Blue Water Report
South Ledge
Black Fin Tuna, Dolphin, 'MAHI MAHI' and Sail fish!
December 3, 2008
I have been waiting for this blue water fishing report! Thanks goodness it has arrived! You are going to love this one'Jim Sheffield reported that while working the South Ledge he and fishing crew had an amazing blue water catch day. On Wednesday (December 3, 2008) they caught 14 black fin tuna in the mid 20 to 30 pounds each, 2 dolphins, and released one sail fish. All fish hit baits pulled 100 foot plus from the boat. The tuna bite was from 6:00 to 7:00 AM and rest of hits took place before noon. With this great report I don't have you tell you, you already know 'now is the time to go!'
Blue Water Baits Pulled
All these blue water fish wanted was baits pulled 'way back!' The 'strike zone' was found 100 plus feet behind the boat. According to the report the baits pulled were regular old cedar plugs, small Ilanders rigged with medium ballyhoo, and a stand by 'daisy chain.' As long as the troll was steady, so was the bite. On some occasions Jim said, 'They had three fish hooked up at once!' Thinking about their catching time frame it would seems that this hook up ratio happened more than once.
The good news is that during this time frame just about any bait pulled might get the attentions of these blue water fish. The reason being is 'they are only passing through and they need a fill up before they leave!'
Let's talk a little about the South Ledge. This area was holding the interest of lots of bait. This situation offered up a serious bite opportunity meaning 'target rich environment!' Jim reported that they worked this area from the time they arrived till they left having
Gulf Stream Report South Ledge
On December 4, 2008
On the next day the South ledge wasn't as healthy as the day before. The water passing was greenish blue and there wasn't much bait to be found holding on the ledge. Chris Newton and Alex Moore took the blue water run along with many others the next day. Once arriving to this area 'it didn't look promising!' The bottom line to this report is 'twenty-four hours' can be a big deal in the fish-feeding world. They had a slow trolling day, but changed up and did some bottom fishing. This proves one thing that if the top water fish aren't interested and in this case not around any longer 'go bottom!' The reason being 'bites happened!' They caught an assortment of bottom fish and found some great new areas to drop the old hook! Thanks so much for taking the time make this report!
