Cold temperatures and breezy conditions have made fishing along Florida's east coast somewhat difficult reports Captain Keith Mixon (www.mixinworkwithplay.com).
However, these less than ideal conditions haven't kept the fish from biting. In protected areas such as leeward sides of bridges or spoil islands, black drum have been caught using live shrimp when fished on the bottom. Many of these fish have been in the two to three pound range. In addition, redfish have been caught using chunks of lady fish or blue crab on a circle hook. Anglers should look for reds around pot holes sunning themselves during mid day. Remember, reds are easily spooked so it will be important to have a stealthy approach.
Around the "Locks" near Port Canaveral, anglers have still been able to find sheepshead around bridge pilings and other structure. During the winter time, many of these sheepshead can weigh upwards to ten pounds. These tasty fish can put up quite a fight so hold on tight.
Attention boaters: water levels are low thanks to strong winds from the west. Sand bars and oyster bars will present hazards for those who do not have local knowledge of Florida's east coast. It will be important to navigate your boat in or near deeper channels.
