With highs in the mid 70's I new this trip was going to be a good one. Cooler air temps meant mobility was a possibility today, and we took advantage of being able to stay cool and cover lots of water. Our concentration was on the section between Anolomick and the inter-boroughs bridge, and we spent our 8hrs together covering miles of water with out seeing another angler.
The lower reaches of the Brodhead are holding good numbers of fish which are concentrated in the deeper holes. Longer light leader and smaller flies has been the key to dredging these fish out. Hatches are still sporadic, however the Brodhead is seeing good variety of insects. Next year the damaged caused by the flood should see considerable improvement in both the character of the stream and in the quality of hatches.
The rock garden in the upper section of the stream still has some deeper then average holes, even with the spring lows we are experiencing, and we concentrated on these holes and the fast water running in and out of then. Each of the holes has been yielding a few to a half dozen fish each. Fish are still keying in on smaller presentation with Pheasant tails and cream caddis pupa being the top producers. However bright pink San Juans fish down and across the current like wets have produced more then their fair share of fish. This allows us to cover water not suitable for nymphing and has added considerable numbers of fish to each trip.
Centerpinning this creek has still been the top producer of numbers of fish with average catches being between 15-35 fish per person in 8 hrs. Pink worms, mealies, and waxies have been working well, however flies and jigs under the floats have been producing when natural baits are not.
