Fishing has been good along Florida's Space Coast reports Captain Keith Mixon (www.mixinworkwithplay.com). In the past week, top water lures have seen plenty of strikes from speckled trout just before first light. MirrOlure's MirrOMullet (number 21) has worked exceptionally well when fished slowly near schools of mullet. The average weight of these fish has been three pounds with an occasional larger fish. The largest trout caught in the past week tipped the scale at nearly six pounds. Several of the fish were caught north of the rail road trestle in Titusville, Florida. In addition, slot size redfish and black drum measuring up to twenty-one inches have been hitting both live and dead baits when fished on the bottom throughout the Haulover Canal. Cut mullet and lady fish have enticed many black drum to bite near the bridge when rigged on a circle hook.
Also, blue fish have been hitting small strips of cut mullet when rigged on a 1/0 J hook along the beach just south of the Cocoa Beach Pier. Seas are two to three feet during high tide have been ideal when targeting this species. Many of these fish have measured twelve to fifteen inches in length. In addition, pompano weighing up to a pound or two have also been active along the beach. Cut clams or sand fleas have been the bait of choice when fished on the bottom in clean water.
