About The Author: Captain

Company: Gordo Banks Pangas

Area Reporting: San Jose Del Cabo - Baja MX

Bio: Eric Brictson was born in Santa Monica, California and has been an avid fishermen since he was five years old and extensively fished both freshwater and saltwater areas of California and Oregon. As a child he and his family often visited Mexico and be became very fond of the country. His frequent trips to the Los Cabos area of Baja became more extended with each visit. In 1985 he moved permanently to his new home and started a small sportfishing fleet, which grew as the years went by and is now called Gordo Banks Pangas.

Eric's fleet consists of six 22 and 23 foot pangas, which are fiberglass skiffs with outboard motors. They are very seaworthy and particularly efficient for launching directly off the sandy beaches. He oversees every aspect of the operations, with the quality of the boats and equipment being of top priority, along with the primary goal to be angler's satisfaction.

He has personally landed black marlin weighing 700 pounds and yellowfin tuna near 300 pounds from his boats but has many other incredible stories to tell of marathon battles with monster sized marlin that ended up being lost. Now he is an avid promoter of catch and release for billfish, and is hoping to influence other fleets of San Jose del Cabo to practice the same.

Red crabs was the talk around the La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos (3/09/2008)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] Red crabs was the talk around the La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos area in recent days, as one of the pangueros received a call early in the week that these elusive crustaceans were being pushed to the surface by giant squid that were gorging themselves on these delicacies, this was in an area offshore of Chileno.
San Jose del Cabo Fish Report (3/02/2008)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] Larger yellowtail in the 25 to 40 pound class were holding on the rocky high spots throughout the area and anglers working iron yo-yos or drift fishing with live mackerel landed some of these brutes, though numbers were not significant, all of these fish were quality.

San Jose del Cabo Fish Report (2/10/2008)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] Inshore action was perhaps the most consistent of any of the other options. Vinorama saw large schools of sierra move in, for anglers that had live sardinas they encountered some frenzied action, the fish were also striking on cast and retrieved lures, hoochies and rapalas.

Anglers reported improved inshore action for sierra and roosterfish (1/20/2008)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] Anglers reported improved inshore action for sierra and roosterfish, with the La Laguna stretch just south of Punta Gorda being very productive recently. San Jose del Cabo Fish Report (1/06/2008)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] Over the weekend the weather was spectacular, no wind and temperatures to 85 degrees, the action picked up accordingly. There were reports of larger cow sized yellowfin tuna being seen breezing on the Jaime Bank, but these fish were not on the bite. Perhaps there will be a winter bite for larger tuna since nothing really ever developed during this past summer or fall season.
San Jose del Cabo Fish Report (12/27/2007)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] Anglers reported the best action towards Cabo San Lucas, where they were concentrating for dorado or striped marlin. Decent numbers of dorado were found close to shore, striking on medium sized trolling lures and on various live, dead and strip baits.
Getting Tuna Up To Feed With Live Sardinas (12/23/2007)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] Starting on last Monday, anglers encountered a whole different scenario than in previous weeks when they were catching easy limits of yellowfin tuna. The live sardinas have remained plentiful, but getting the tuna to come up and feed in the areas of Iman, Punta Gorda and Palmilla where they had been so abundant has been nearly impossible. Only a handful of tuna were being hooked into, still in the range of 10 to 20 pounds and this has the sportfishing fleet scattering looking for other action.
Better Tuna Action On The San Luis Bank and Off Punta Gorda (12/09/2007)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] The hot bite off of Palmilla point became less consistent, though on some days the tuna were found there, fleets found better action on the San Luis Bank and off of Punta Gorda, this bite was exclusively on bait, so it was worth while patiently waiting and searching for the sardinas early in the morning. The average sized yellowfin were around 8 to 14 pounds, but there was also another grade of tuna mixed in that ranged up over 20 pounds.
Tuna Fishing From Palmilia Point To Iman Bank (12/02/2007)

Some tuna up to 30 pounds were found and one 59 pound specimen was also accounted for by a Gordo Banks Panga. The yellowfin definitely were the most dominate speices this week, dorado numbers dropped substantially, though some fish in the 5 to 15 pound class were still encountered.
The elusive wahoo have finally decided to wake up and get into the action. (11/18/2007)

[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] The action was mainly either on the Inner Gordo Bank or north on the Iman, also closer to shore off of Punta Gorda, yellowfin tuna was the most common species being encountered, most of the fish were averaging 8 to 15 pounds, but on some days a larger grade of tuna was found mixed in, with a handful of yellowfin in the 35 to 80 pound class accounted for.

[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] Last week the San Jose del Cabo fleet had reported slower action on what had been very consistent fishing for both yellowfin tuna and dorado, but once again this week started out with a flurry and fish counts were excellent throughout the week.
La Fortuna to the Iman Bank Proved To Be Consistent Fishing (10/07/2007)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] The action varied from day to day, one day it would be dorado that dominated the bite and then the next it would be the yellowfin tuna that were more aggressive, then on other days it was about a equal split between the two species. The fish would strike on various trolled lures, but it was the fresh live or dead bait that they really preferred. The most consistent place proved to be from La Fortuna to the Iman Bank.
San Jose del Cabo Fish Report (9/23/2007)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] Water conditions fluctuated from the first part of the week, when the clarity improved and currents were slack, then over the weekend some areas became a bit off colored, though none of that really mattered because fish counts for dorado and yellowfin tuna were very good throughout most of the week. Though crowds of anglers were down, the few that were going out did very well in the areas from the Gordo Banks to Vinorama, particularly on the Iman Bank.
San Jose del Cabo Fish Report Sept. 3 - 9 (9/09/2007)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] Last weekend forecasters had predicted that Hurricane Henriette would follow a more westerly path, with the eye of the storm passing some 100 miles or so off the Pacific coast of Baja where Todo Santos is, well that situation changed dramatically, as the storm had a mind of its own and changed course towards the northeast and slowly made its way to landfall at San Jose del Cabo in the early afternoon of Sept. 4.
San Jose del Cabo Fish Report (9/02/2007)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] The fishing action for this week would have to be considered very good, especially compared to early summer. There were good numbers of dorado found throughout the area, particularly from the Gordo Banks to Iman, fish were striking equally on lures and bait, ranging from 10 to 40 pounds, with a few larger bulls up to 50 pounds being accounted for. Catches of 4 to 12 dorado per boat were common place.
San Jose del Cabo Fish Report (8/09/2007)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] The most consistent action for yellowfin tuna was found off of the Palmilla and Red Hill area, within a few miles of shore, these were smaller football sized tuna that were striking on hoochies, rapalas, feathers and sardinas. Charters were accounting for an average of 5 to 18 fish per outing, with the best action coming early in the day. Dorado were found throughout the region, ranging from small 5 pound peanuts on up to 50 pound bulls.

San Jose del Cabo Fish Report (7/29/2007)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] The week started off with the fishing action improving before the storm, there were good numbers of striped marlin, dorado to 35 pounds, yellowfin tuna offshore with porpoise and even a handful of wahoo, as well as an assortment of snappers and amberjack. Since the storm water conditions became cooler and stirred up closer to shore, but 15 to 20 miles offshore the water was clean and 80 degrees.
San Jose del Cabo Fish Report (7/22/2007)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] The majority of charters are now trying their luck offshore, looking for the cleaner water and trolling a combination of lures and bait. There have been more striped marlin than any other species, often seen riding the swells on the surface, but at times they were not easy to entice into striking, a percentage were hitting on lures, but live mackerel proved to be the best bet, the stripers that were landed were ranging in size from juvenile 50 pound fish to hefty adult 150 pound plus specimens.
San Jose del Cabo Fish Report (7/15/2007)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] Perhaps the biggest local news report this past week was that on July 10 the Puerto Los Cabos Marina channel was finally opened, this happened by surprise during the middle of night, with an armada of heavy equipment attacking the last sand bar separating the Sea of Cortez and the marina basin, which will soon be home to some 500 vessels, ranging from pangas, cruisers to super yachts.
San Jose del Cabo Fish Report June 18 - 24 (6/24/2007)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] Persistent southern winds pushed in chilly Pacific currents, reaching as far as Los Frailes and this dropped water temperatures to the mid 60s, with a break of 72 plus degree water being found some twenty plus miles offshore. This influx of cold off colored water caused a dramatic affect on the fishing, scattering any inshore action that had been going on and forcing fleets to travel long distances in search of more favorable water conditions.

Fishing Gordo Banks to Los Frailes (6/10/2007)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] Water temperatures have continued to fluctuate greatly, varying from the low 60s on the Pacific to the upper 70s in the East Cape area, but mid-week the cooler currents actually reached as far as Buena Vista, dipping down to 70 degrees before gradually starting to warm back up. These rapidly changing conditions has not helped the fishing stabilize and has made for inconsistent action, as concentrations of baitfish keep moving and gamefish are scattered.
San Jose del Cabo Fish Report (6/03/2007)
[San Jose del Cabo,BJ] Along the shoreline there was some excellent action found, African pompano, golden jacks, dogtooth snapper, pargo Colorado, sierra, jack crevalle and roosterfish were the main species accounted for. On Thursday the bite off of the La Laguna shipwreck was absolutely wide open for the pompano, fish averaged 6 to 10 pounds.
