Bio: Hi, my name is Joel "Boog" Ballweg and I run professionally guided fishing trips primarily on Lake Wisconsin. I am a life long resident of this area and grew up fishing Lake Wisconsin and the Wisconsin river. Ballweg's Guide Service was started in 2003 and has grown every year since. Lake Wisconsin offers excellent fishing for walleye, sauger, crappie, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegills and white bass. We target walleye, crappie, bluegill and white bass. On average, I will spend between 75-100 days fishing on Lake Wisconsin and the Wisconsin river each year. Lake Wisconsin covers approximately 9000 surface acres and it is the furthest down stream reservoir on the Wisconsin River system. It is located about 30 miles north of Madison, Wisconsin. A strong network of local anglers and several other local fishing guides is an added benefit of growing up in this area. These guys know whats going on out on the water and sharing information helps all of us stay on top of the latest action. In addition, if you have a large group of anglers, we can arrange with the other local guides to accomadate you.
[Wisconsin River,WI] Early summer walleye & sauger fishing is just starting to pick up here on Lake Wisconsin. The bite should continue to get better and better over the next week.
[Wisconsin River,WI] This time of the year on Lake Wisconsin, a guy has a choice. He can target crappies on or near the beds or you can chase walleyes & saugers out in the main lake.
[Wisconsin River,WI] When you find the crappies on the spawning beds, the action is usually fast and consistent. That's what we experienced today on Lake Wisconsin.
[Wisconsin River,WI] Doug Kuiper is a crappie fishing nut! He absolutely loves fishing for these speckled panfish and simply can't get enough information about how to catch them.
[Wisconsin River,WI] Scott Billings and Steve Fausnaugh met me at 2:00pm this afternoon at the boat landing. They were looking forward to getting in on some of the great spring crappie fishing that they've read and heard about on Lake Wisconsin. There timing could not have been better!
[Wisconsin River,WI] A long, cold winter was officially put behind us when we made our first open water walleye fishing excursion of the year to the Wisconsin river below the Dells Dam. Long time friends Mark "Buck" Pings and Kevin Key were more than willing to join me for the first fishing trip of the year. All of us were looking forward to feeling the pull of a walleye or sauger on the end of our line.
[Wisconsin River,WI] Saturday, May 12, 2007 The crappie fishing this spring was fun but I was ready to leave it behind and start chasing walleyes. I've been seeing lots of good fish pictures from quite a few of the other Lake Wisconsin walleye fisherman and it's been killing me to not be able to go after them. Today was the day I started to change all that.
[Wisconsin River,WI] After the day we had yesterday on Lake Wisconsin, I was really wondering if they would be just as hot today. Dewey Schultz and Kim Christians were my guest today. Dewey is a repeat client and proved his fish catching ability to me last fall when he narrowly out fished me in my own boat. Ouch!
[Wisconsin River,WI] Dave Bishop and Chuck Markham joined me today for there first ever fishing trip on Lake Wisconsin. Walleyes and saugers were still the target and these two were pretty excited and anxious to both catch fish and to learn some things about the methods used to catch them.
[Wisconsin River,WI] Scott Wright & Jim Linder have been friends for a long time. Scott lives in Middleton, WI and Jim lives up in Wausau, WI. Even though they live a couple of hours apart, it sounded as though they managed to get together on a pretty regular basis. Today they were spending time together in my fishing boat.
[Wisconsin River,WI] Todd Kowalski had planned this day out quite awhile back. He gave his dad a guided fishing trip with "Ballwegs Guide Service" on Lake Wisconsin for Christmas. The kind of gift that you can share with the person to whom you give it to.
[Wisconsin River,WI] The overnight temperatures got a bit chillier than normal and the digital thermometer on the my Toyota Tundra read 38 degrees as I made my way to the boat landing. Ed Zyga, Dan Anderson and Ted Cera were following me and all were looking forward to spending a day chasing walleyes & saugers on Lake Wisconsin.
[Wisconsin River,WI] Spent the morning chasing crappies with Chuck Hulburt and Gary Maki then trying our hand at walleye fishing during the middle of the day before returning to crappies again later in the afternoon. Gary had heard about the great trip Chuck and his wife Billy had fishing crappies with me last fall and both of them were hoping for something similar today.
[Wisconsin River,WI] Saturdays weather report called for east winds from 12-18mph. In truth though, they should have started at 18 and gone up considerably from there. Morning temperatures ran right around 50 degrees and some light rain fell also.
[Wisconsin River,WI] On Sunday, Dick Majcher and his daughter Pam jumped in the boat for a day of fishing. Cold overnight temperatures in the spring usually mean the fishing will be slow in the early morning hours.
[Wisconsin River,WI] It's the last weekend of April and chances are, if you went fishing on Lake Wisconsin, you were probably chasing crappies. Catching some slabs is a great way to start out the new year.
