Captain Steven had high expectations for capturing big numbers of large redfish on Saturdays morning's charter. For weeks I have been scoring regularly catching many bronze bombers over 30".
Before I pick up my anglers gathering bait was at hand. The new crop of white baits are small with most unusable. Another week and gathering bait should be a slam dunk.
With my anglers Randy and his son Jeffrey on board we quickly made the short run into a no motor zone and set up on an oyster bar snug tight to a Mangrove Island. After 10 minutes of no action a school of redfish appeared 100 yards to our right coming right at us. They were gone as quick as they appeared. No redfish was a huge disappointment. Casting is at a premium during high tides as the redfish are up and under the Mangroves.
Off we went to one of my trout spots. First fish was a flounder followed by a grouper. Didn't fell like a trout spot at all! Then Jeffrey's rod bent deeply and the dragged screamed. A strong 30" Cobia was on the other end and was not giving up. Cobia is a prize catch and amazing battler. Boat side the Cobia went nuts as I tried numerous times to get the Boca grip in his jaw. A couple quick pictures of Jeffrey's prize catch and back into the water the Cobia went. Finally after 5 or 6 species we got our first trout.
Overall not the bite it's been but all in all a fun day. Unlike last weekend's monsoons the weather was beautiful today.
