In the past week, several species of game fish have been caught throughout Florida's Space Coast reports Captain Keith Mixon (www.mixinworkwithplay.com). Inshore fishing has improved as water temperatures begin to warm up in both the Indian and Banana rivers. During mid day, several red fish have been caught along the eastern shore line of the Indian River south of Titusville, Florida. Bright sunny skies have made sight casting easier when fishing for reds in three feet of water or less. When targeting reds, live shrimp on a circle hook attached to fifteen pound test mono leader and ten pound test Power Pro has been the right combination to bring these fish to the boat.
Near Port Canaveral, Pompano continue to aggressively feed on cut clams, sand fleas, and shrimp. Low tide, a light west wind, and seas two feet or less are ideal conditions for catching pompano. The average weight of these pompano has been two to three pounds. In addition, several sheepshead have been caught inside Port Canaveral near barnacle covered docks and pilings. Shrimp or cut clams on a 1/0 hook have enticed several of these bait stealers to bite. The average weight of these sheepshead has been nearly three pounds.
