The crew of RELENTLESS had a great first day of the 2007 fishing season, fishing on Stellwagen Bank landing excellent numbers of haddock and some decent cod brought over the rail also. Fishing today was David Nava of Charlestown, MA, David Hegarty of Winchester, MA, Eric Hill of Pembroke, MA, Dan Potter of Scituate, MA, Todd McMahon of Marshfield, MA and John Niemiera from CT.
Due to early morning tides and dredging issues in Green Harbor this party met us early and we were underway just before 4:00AM. Once out the entrance we had a full lit morning sky with a pretty full moon and it was not long before we were passing through a fleet of draggers working the western edge of Stellwagen Bank. Once we stopped in water around 150-175 ft it was the beginning of a great day of fishing. Using fresh sea clams haddock were being brought aboard with many bull (large) ones coming across the rail.
It was not long before the bank looked like the southeast expressway being the first day to legally land cod in the Gulf of Maine. This resulted in boats like the Viking Starship making the trek up from Montauk to join in on the action.
Later in the morning we started to get into a few cod and the highlight of the day was the 30 LB steaker landed by Eric Hill on a clam. Needless to say he was very excited to see the fish come to the surface and finally to gaff by Shaun our mate for the day.
At the end of the day each angler went home with plenty of fillets of both cod and haddock and discussed booking additional trips this spring and summer along with great shots of whales which were feeding in the area.
If you are interested in going aboard a shared or private cod fishing trip, send an e-mail to captdave@relentlesscharters.com I wish everyone tight lines and I hope you enjoy the report.
Respectfully,
Captain Dave Waldrip
