The impending cold front slowed the bite down a bit early on, but after the tide got moving it really picked up. We had a good trout day with most caught on artificial lures worked slowly along the bottom. A ¼ oz. jighead, a small jerkbait and using the twitch and wind method. Many strikes would right at the boat as the fish were following and short/striking the lures. Long cast are a must if you plan on getting the lure in front of more fish. It's simple, the more water you cover the more fish you find. We continually made long cast in the same direction as the drift because over the years I've found it's not good to cast into the wind using braid fishing line. We drift fished several flats in 2-5 feet of water and caught 20-25 spotted sea trout and 10 or so silver trout and two mackerel. Most fish were caught on Pumpkin Jigs – motor oil and root beer colors. We've caught a few pompano this year using the same technique but none today.
It's hard to believe the mackerel are still prowling the flats. But then again someone reported to me they're still catching kingfish offshore. It seems like every trip we catch several mackerel some average to small but occasionally a big one. I'm fairly certain some of these fish remain as residents throughout the winter and never migrate.
