Top water lures are working well on some nice speckled trout in the early mornings. We're catching them mostly around the mouths of bayous that empty into the river. That's where the pogy and mullet seem to be gathering in the mornings and the trout move in for the feast.
On some trips we are using live pogy to catch the trout. The live bait is producing a few more trout than we are catching on lures, but the top water action is hard to pass up even if it means a few less fish in the box.
The redfish are still feeding well on the flats and along the marsh banks. The live pogy are producing limits of reds right now. We are also having good luck trolling the banks and casting plastics to catch the reds.
Over the next few weeks we will begin to see the speckled trout in greater numbers as they migrate into the river. We'll continue to use the live pogy until late October and we'll also be using a lot of plastics and top water lures.
