INCREDIBLE!!! That’s the word that comes to mind as I try my best to describe the latest fishing action here along the Nature Coast. As the title of this report reads “So many fish so little time to write” its been truly hard to find the time to write a decent report as it’s way more fun on the water these days. From Snook and Redfish in the backcountry to Spanish Mackerel and Cobia on the wrecks and reefs anglers have had a plethora of options fishing the coastal waters stretching from Crystal River to Homosassa.
On days featuring subtle winds and bluebird skies myself and the rest of the Reel Florida Fishing Charters crew have found it extremely hard to pass up the numerous schools of Jacks, Spanish Mackerel, and Bluefish that have been crashing the surface all over the flats. These feeding frenzies have posed problems as most guides find it extremely hard to make it to spot number one on the itinerary when casting plugs to Jacks can be so much fun. Although these speedy fish are not the most ideal table fare in the Gulf they sure can put a bend in a rod. I have yet to see a child under the age of 50 grin from ear to ear while doing battle with these drag screaming fish.
Going into the rest of May and June the top targets of the Nature Coast will continue to be Redfish, Snook, Cobia, and Tarpon. Although all four of these species roam different areas of the Nature Coast this time of year it’s not unheard of to catch all four of these species within the same day. In fact many schools of Redfish will feature Snook in them and some of the largest migratory Tarpon schools of the season will likely have Cobia in them. Being ready for every species at any given time is a must right now, which is why having rods rigged with lures that appeal to multiple species is key. Rods rigged with nose hooked jerk baits or suspending twitch baits is ideal for both Reds and Snook and having a heavy rod rigged with a large 9-12” Hogy will surely catch the attention of a hungry Tarpon or Cobia.
Long story short: Don’t sit around watching fishing!!! Hit the water and Live it!!!
