Talk Wrench
My father owned a great "talk Wrench." It had it own cardboard box and he kept it under the bed most of the time. Daddy only brought it out on special occasions. I remember this one time that he was working on one of the engines and he asked me to go get the wrench. I felt privileged, because I was never supposed to mess with the "talk wrench!"
Up to the house I went skipping all the way. I got down on my knees and lay down so that I could reach the cardboard box. As I pulled the box towards me I had to wonder whether or not it was going to "talk!" As you can imagine, "it unfortunately did not talk!"
I cradled the box and carried it to my father. When I arrived he was standing over the engine. At the time, I didn't know what the heck he was doing. He was always messing with something on the boat. As I think about it and the "old talk wrench" he was putting the head back on the engine. Believe me, "I didn't know what he was doing back then. All I knew was that he needed time with the "talk wrench!"
I found this out many years later. The so-called "talk wrench" was in fact a "torque wrench," which helped determine the amount of pressure applied when you are tighten certain bolts. Head bolts, which basically held the top of the engine on, required around 32 pounds of turn pressure. (As I remember!) At the time I didn't understand about bolts and their importance, but now I do. All I wanted to do, as a child was to get that "talk wrench" talking to me! After all it certainly must have talked to daddy! I don't know why I just didn't ask my father to explain this to me. I guess some questions never get asked. In this case as a small child I can truly say, "that I really never got along with that stuffy old but shinny talk wrench!"
