Clear skies and bright sunny conditions have made sight fishing easier reports Captain Keith Mixon (www.mixinworkwithplay.com). During the past week, several black drum, red fish, and sheepshead have been schooling up in tighter schools due to the cooler weather. As water temperatures continue to drop, many of these fish have been moving along the flats during mid day in search of food. Live shrimp have been the main bait of choice when sight casting to red fish and black drum in the southern part of Mosquito Lagoon. The average weight of these fish has been nearly five pounds.
In addition, cut clams or live shrimp fished near pilings covered in barnacles has worked exceptionally well for sheepshead. The average length of these fish has been just above the legal limit of twelve inches. Areas throughout Port Canaveral, the Canaveral Locks, and the Banana River have been productive for catching sheepshead.
