Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak
A return fishing charter, Jeff Mollica, along with live long fishing buddies Bob and Rick Grady from Massachusetts chartered the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea charter fishing here in Fort Lauderdale FL. Jeff, a boat owner and Tuna fishermen, along with Bob and Rick, who fished in Australia, made a return trip to Fort Lauderdale to go fishing on the Happy Day Today again.
Winds were out of the east, northeast 10-15 mph with seas running 3-5 ft., blue waters pushed into the first reef. The anglers requested to do some Sailfishing so we stopped to purchase a dozen live Goggles Eyes at T&T Bait located in the Fort Lauderdale inlet. Fifteen minutes later, we had two kites flying in 145 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, FL with two live Goggle Eyes from each kite and one from the rigger with a spin on lead.
Our first strike came on the rigger bait and the hook was pulled. As the anglers were sitting in the cockpit talking about their Tuna fishing experiences up north, a Mahi Mahi popped up on the left long rigger. Bob was our angler and he reeled in a nice Mahi Mahi, which will be served for dinner that night. We set up again – this time a Sailfish came free jumping between the long and the short baits, trying to dislodge the Remoras (leeches) from his body. At that point I knew I was in the right area off of Fort Lauderdale where the Sailfish were migrating. Left long!!! A Sailfish appeared as he grabbed the live Goggle Eye and immediately came out of the water walking towards the boat. The sun exposed his brilliant neon colors. The Sailfish came out of the water 20 ft. from the boat and did a 360, almost landing in the cockpit. Rick was our angler and twenty minutes into the fight he reeled in an 89" Sailfish estimated at 55 lbs, while pictures were being taken. We set up again, our next bite came on the right long as the Anaconda Kingfish exited the water screaming off line – Jeff was our angler. The back and forth tug of water was rewarded with a 21 lb. Kingfish.
With a Sailfish, Kingfish, Tuna and two Bonitos, it was time to head back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316 while the anglers retired to the a/c salon.
