Fishing Fort Lauderdale with Topshotfishing and Capt. Zsak
Marc Larjoie, Ray Lapensee, Andrew Parker and Rick Lafleche were vacationing in Fort Lauderdale, getting away from the cold weather in Canada, and decided to charter the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing. Wind was out of the west at 5 mph, overcast skies with the sun playing peekaboo, temperatures in the mid 80's.
The crew from Canada discussed what kind of fishing they were interested in and decided to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T & T Bait hoping to catch a Sailfish. Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale 1.8 miles from shore. With very little wind we decided to start the charter off by trolling. We put out two #8 plainers, one with a 3 1/2 blue reflector drone spoon and the other with a pink and blue sea witch in front of a double hooked Bonito strip. For surface baits we went with four Ballyhoos.
We trolled the reefs ranging from 80 ft. out to 180 ft of water catching a couple shorts Kingfish. I could see a blue-green edge forming in 200 ft. of water in Fort Lauderdale with a little current edge on it, which looked like an inviting area to do live bait fishing. I put out an ultra light kite on a 20 lb. kite rod with two live Goggle Eyes and two live Goggle Eyes from the outriggers. The trap was set while the anglers conversed. There were a couple of chop offs from the outriggers while we waited for the dark shadow to appear.
Left long!!!! Dorsal and bill out of the water as he frantically chased the live Goggle Eye. Hooked Up!!! Sailfish tail walking out of the water as he charged the boat. Marc, our angler, jumped into the fighting chair to experience the challenge. After a 30 minute battle, Matt, our mate, wired the Sailfish to the side of the boat for picture taking. The Sailfish was released to fight again.
With a smile on Marc's face and receiving congratulations from his friends, they all retired into the a/c salon for the trip back to the Bahia Mar Dock, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
