Lindsay, Colton and Zack chartered the Top Shot Sportfishing charter boat team for a private deep-sea charter boat sport fishing trip in Fort Lauderdale, FL. As they boarded the boat, they were greeted by Captain Zsak and mate, Dave, from the Top Shot Sportfishing Charter Boat Team.
Fifteen to twenty minutes after leaving the dock, we started the charter trolling the reef in 150 ft. of water off of Fort Lauderdale, using two deep planner lines with a sea witch and a spoon and surface lines trolling 4 lures. We had scattered showers offshore of us, and the wind gradually picked up as the day went on.
The first fish we caught was a Kingfish. Next, we hooked up a few Bonitas weighing 8 to 10 pounds. Once we started marking fish on the depth sounder, I continued to stay in the area working the school of fish. We also got Bonita bites on the rigger lines, and they put up the best fight since they were on lighter tackle. The lures were smaller squids with a strip bait. I was trolling from deep to shallow waters along the reef, getting most of the bites heading with the current. Some of the fish we caught were singles and others were double headers.
Now, we decided to try for a Shark. I used a Kingfish and a Bonita that we previously caught as bait and cut them in half. We set out the two baits and positioned the boat facing into the current. The blood and oils track down the reef line attracting anything hungry. After 30 minutes with the baits in the water, we had a big bite. The rod bent over, and we started reeling in the fish, but, unfortunately, it pulled the hook. We checked the bait, put on a fresh one and got it back in position. Shortly after putting out the bait, the rod bent over again, but this time the hook was set. We started fighting this fish, and after a 30-minute battle, a Bull Shark came up along the side of the boat. We removed the hooks, got a measurement and released the Bull Shark.
After an excellent day of fishing, catching 6 Bonitas, 1 Kingfish and 1 Bull Shark, it was time to head back to the dock. The happy anglers retired into the a/c salon watching the plasma TV and enjoying the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
