It sure looks like it's going to be an early spring for 2011 here on the Gulf Coast of Florida. For last week and the next weeks forecast we're averaging 10 degrees above normal.
Anybody want to bet on the date that the first Cobia caught? (I'm sticking with March 8th).
With all this warm weather the Speckled Trout bite is not going to be far away from excellent, I'm already catching some nice fish in areas that I usually find them in April. (It's still all catch and release for specks though).
I've been on some schools of Red Fish (slot sized fish) that number in the hundreds. It's just amazing how many Red's there are in Santa Rosa Sound right now. The water is clear and the fish are hungry, the bait of choice has been the 1/8oz gold spoon.
If you're fishing around the passes you will be catching male Sheepshead and the bigger Red Fish. It won't be long before the big female Sheepshead start to show up. It looks like one out of ten fish are females right now.
Out on the beaches, look for smaller schools of Bull Red Fish, they're there. I have already seen schools of Crevalle Jack's some of the schools are numbering over fifty fish. There are mounds of bait showing up along the beaches also. All is pointing to a fabulous spring and I can't wait!!!!!!
