The fishing off of Ft. Lauderdale was FANNTASTIC today. At 7:45 this morning, we met our group at the dock at Bahia Mar Resort in Ft. Lauderdale.
By 8:45 we were well offshore of the South Florida skyline. Our first strike came from a nice dolphin in the 25 lb class. The dolphin crashed a high speed lure designed for big game fish like a marlin or a tuna.
Our second bite came about 9:00, by then we were well offshore of Ft. Lauderdale in about 830 feet of water. Another nice dolphin in the 25 lb class was in the fish box.
We continued further offshore, working weedlines and watching for birds working. About 11:30 we came upon a school of dolphin working some big mats of sargasso weed. We got out the spinning rods for some light tackle fun. Even a schoolie dolphin can fight like a big game fish if you use light tackle.
Even though we fished for dolphin exclusively today. There are still plenty of big game fish off of Ft. Lauderdale. Hammerhead and bull sharks are still here. Night fishing for swordfish is one of the premier big game fish prized all over the world and readily caught in the offshore waters off of South Florida.
Sailfish are still fairly common in June, though this is far from the prime sailfish season of December through March in South Florida.
Really good numbers of king mackeral are being caught. They might not be big game, but they are a consistent crowd pleaser and a great way to introduce kids to charter fishing.
Tight lines,
Capt. Mark Fann
