September 4th, 2006 Elkhorn Creek water 6" below summer pool.
This is the 7th report in a series about Elkhorn Creek, located in Frankfort KY. If you are not familiar with the Elkhorn it is probably time to make yourself familiar. Rated as one of the top smallmouth streams in the southeast this body of water is sure meet the needs of any angler from 9 to 90. The Elkhorn boast a wide variety of game fish. Not only do you have the ever elusive smallmouth but you will also encounter a nice largemouth population as well as white bass and many different types of sunfish.
Fishing on the Elkhorn yesterday was good. I had the opportunity to get out with my son and wade a section I had not fished for about 2 months. Being a holiday weekend I did not know how crowded it might be so we got out early (6:30). The sun was just starting to come up when we got on the water. When we arrived there were already 3 individuals there just upstream from us. Entering the water was a treat to say the least. With the recent change in the outside temperature the water felt much colder then normal. I know most of that was physiological but that didn't make things any warmer for us. The morning started off slow but picked up as we went along. Lures of choice for the day were buzzbaits and soft plastics. I started out with a Pop R and my son started with a buzzbait. Needless to say the buzzbait prevailed. I raised a few fish on the Pop R but could not connect. In all I believe he caught 4 or 5 smallmouth's on the buzz. We fished some current and some slow water. Most of our success came in the current with soft plastics. The top water bite is picking up but we are still a few weeks out before it really turns on. In all we caught 20 smallies. Nothing over 1.5lb. The Beech and Sycamore trees are slowly loosing there foliage. The wind picked up once and it became an obstacle course on the water to get your bait back without a hitchhiker attached to it. I could not think of a better way to spend my time yesterday then fishing along side my son. If you have children get out and take them fishing. It's an experience neither one of you will forget. Good Fishing and God Bless.
I hope this report helps you to catch more fish. The Elkhorn can be a little overwhelming if you are not familiar with the area. It is made up of the north and south branch of the Elkhorn that converges and makes the main stem, that empty into the Kentucky River. Please remember to be careful because you are dealing with moving water and that it can rise quickly cutting off your exit. God Bless and Safe Fishing.
