The bottom fishing the past 2 weeks has simply gone wide open. Bigger spot are showing up more and more each day in the Bay off of Gwynns Island. Shell piles in 20-27 feet of water have been the ticket lately for the bigger spot. Our charters this week have averaged numbers in the low 100's per person with our group on Saturdays charter having individual anglers reaching the 200 fish count. That is one cooler full of spot folks! With the impressive numbers we are seeing so far this early fall we have still yet to register our first citation spot of the season nor have we seen any of the infamous "yellow bellies".
In my opinion we are still a bit too warm with the water temperature yet to make these fish want to school and start to migrate out of the bay. Ive seen this pattern before over the many years I have been fishing. If we do not experience dramatically cooler temperatures soon we will have some outstanding bottomfishing through October. We'll take it!
Even though we have the numbers of good quality fish now the best is still yet to come.
The trout bite is also hot right now. We have been consistently limiting out on trout up to 18 inches while we are spot fishing. Thats an extra bonus to take home the 7 per person limit of trout while toting a cooler full of spot back home. Our night charters are really racking up on the spot, trout, bluefish and stripers. The stripers are going back but its an encouraging sign for the upcoming season in October. WE CANT WAIT!
