April, 2010
Temperatures, both air and water, have been below normal in April. They have not climbed back to their average range. But the good news is fishing has been excellent.
Inshore fishing during April has been very consistent on all of my trips. We are still targeting redfish and trout in the back waters of St. Joseph Sound and around the Dunedin area.
We started the month out chasing redfish in the morning. The reds have been hanging around several different spots up close to the shore line near the mangroves and oyster beds.
Locating the fish took a little time. They were always on the move and never in the same place from day to day. With a great deal of knowledge for the area, and a very quiet approach, we found the reds.
Three guests joined Salt Aire for a day of redfish hunting. They all had great patience and it finally paid off. A nice 27 inch redfish found Joe's bait and put up a great fight.
We caught another red in the area and moved on to the trout.
I staked out at several different spoil islands but the trout bite was off. They would not bite shrimp or white bait. Blame it on the weather or blame it on the tide, but don't blame it on the fisherman.
The fishes feeding pattern has been very inconsistent. Sometimes they eat shrimp and other times white bait. So lately, I have been bringing both. The fish will start gorging on the white bait as soon as they saturate the bays.
Bring out the cast nets and sharpen up the skills. Throwing for white bait will be part of going fishing. Having the right bait in your live well will make all the difference.
