Captain Judy's Saltwater Fishing Report
Which includes:
Inshore report, Offshore Report, Freshies Suggestions, and "Little Miss Judy's Believe It or Not!" (Story)
Fall/Winter Run of King Mackerel
Let the catching games begin! Captain Ken fished hard this past week doing what he does best and that's making the best of what he had to deal with! Most findings were due more to having to stay in one area than wanting too! Rough sea conditions regulated any sort of moving for long distances. In the case of this report, "it was a good thing it was a little rough!
The bottom line to this report is to let you know that the fall/winter run of king mackerel is now in our court or should I say, "our waters!" We have pretty much had a king mackerel scattered bite from near shore to the Gulf Stream waters for this entire fish season. However, the holding patterns of these fish have not been predictable, as I believe the fall/winter run will be. With that being said, "artificial reefs located in 50 plus feet of water are going to holding this fish's attention. The bait in these areas is holding their feeding attentions. I will report that most of the fish that were caught were done so while trolling deep. This means (as the fish have been all year) that they are still in a holding deep pattern.
Most live baits that the kings are interested in have also been in a holding deep pattern. Cigar minnows and Spanish Sardines are king mackerel candy especially when talking about the ones in an offshore feeding pattern. Menhaden/porgies are also a great bait, but normally only accessible around the beachfront areas. Keeping that in mind I suggest when you see them surface schooling that you get the old cast net out and give it a throw or two. It's always great to have a back up bait in the old live well!
