First Contact in the Bay...
By: Capt. Hap Farrell
It was the 9th of May 2009 when one of the charter fleet from Rock Harbor found his first striper off the Brewster Flats in 23 feet of water. It was by no means the first bass landed in the Bay. A few keepers have been reported being caught in the Bay days earlier, so I'm sure a number of small fish like the 26 inch fish I landed had been taken. However, it was my first of the season so the curse is off.
With some good weather in mid April I was able to get the boat ready early. I was over in Rock Harbor earlier than normal so all my tackle was ready early. The fish, they seem to be on time. That is a good thing. This should mean that in just a few days we should find some big fish in the deeper water in by the #3 and # 5 cans leading up into Welfleet. This does not mean that the fishing from shore around Crowel Rd. and South Sunken Meadow, both in Eastham, will stop. Just that us boaters will get in on the action also. The season has started, the fish are here...
