BC Fishing Report - Happy Holidays!

I know it's a little early, but Happy Holidays to everyone! This is the slowest time of year on the water and a great time to reflect on what a great year it was. This past summer turned out to be exceptional! We had some very consistent fishing all season long at the lodge in Zeballos. Great salmon and halibut fishing was experienced by many returning and new guests. This next season is booking up very fast. We are over half full already, so if you have a specific time frame in mind for next year, you will want to drop me a line soon.

The winter Chinook fishing has just started to pick up around Victoria. The last month or so has seen lots of small fish, but this past weekend some nice springs up to 15 pounds were caught. Halibut season is still open, and I am hoping to get out for at least one more trip myself to help fill the freezer for the winter. We have a couple sets of good tides coming up if anyone wants to get out for one last drop of the line in 2013!

I am going to be holding a new promotion into the New Year. Social media is everywhere now and I am going to start do a lot more hands on and up to date reports for everyone. I am offering a $500 Reel Obsession Sport Fishing gift certificate to be used in Victoria or Zeballos to anyone who "likes" us on Facebook, follows us on Twitter or writes a review for us on TripAdvisor. For each one of these you submit, you will get your name in the draw. Please send this out to family and friends that would be interested as well. I am going to hold the draw around January 15, so make sure to get your likes and reviews in before then. Thank you in advance to everyone who participates.

Salmon Facts

Did you know?

Chinook salmon may spend between 1 to 8 years in the ocean before returning to their native streams to spawn, though the average is 3 to 4 years.

Chinook need to spawn in streams that are larger and deeper than that of other salmon. Chinook salmon spawn from midsummer to late fall, depending on the run. Fry and smolts usually stay in fresh water from 1 to 18 months before travelling downstream to estuaries, where they can remain up to 200 days.

Halibut Facts

Halibut are among the largest fish in the sea and the largest of all the flatfish. They can grow to more than 8 ft long and 700 lbs. Halibut weighing in at more than 100 pounds are often called "Barn Doors", while smaller halibut, less than 20 pounds or so, are often called "Chickens".

The IGFA record was apparently broken off the waters of Norway on July 4, 2013 by a 515 lb, 9 ft. fish. It was 56 lbs. heavier than the previous record, but is awaiting certification. The previous record was caught out of Dutch Harbour Alaska, in 1996 and weighed in at 459 lbs.

I hope everyone has a safe and fun filled holiday season. Give me a shout or drop me a line with any questions about the 2014 season. I look forward to hearing from you.
