A group of anglers from Cape Town went fishing on Monday in not so perfect weather, but ended up with a great mixed bag of fish. Leaving Struisbaai harbour they went straight to Skipskop and started fishing for cob and bottom fish. It did not take too long for the first fish to be brought on board - a lovely Dageraad. As this spcis of fish is on the endangered list it was quickly and safely released again.
As the mornings fishing progressed more and more Dageraad were caught and released, and in between that a small cob and a few Santer were also caught and kept for the pan. The skipper of Awesome Charters went searching for other spots, fishing various pinnacles and secret spots, and a few more fish were brought on board including some Red Roman.
With a predicted strong SE wind for the next day, and the sea getting slightly better duing the course of the morning, it was decided to carry on fishing for the rest of the day. A quick stop back at Struisbaai harbour for more bait and Awesome Charters were off again to fish the shallow waters from the harbour to Saxons reef.
It was here that one of the anglers hooked into a lovely 80 kg Black Ray, a very strong fighting fish, giving him a super tussle before the fish was finally brought to the boat. The fish was safely gaffed, the hooked removed, and returned back to the sea. A few more bottom fish were caught and the tired but very happy anglers returned safely to Struisbaai harbour late the afternoon.
