Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 9/13/09
For the first full week of September the lake was a little slower than I expected but we did manage to find some quality fish. The best news is the bait not only is everywhere but the size of the bait out there is just getting to where it will match most crank baits on the market. You see a critical part of fall fishing is that the bait be big enough to force the bass to feed on similar size but erratic movement type baits. Also the bigger fish we did catch had full bellies looking close to spring spawning bass in size and belly structure; that means they are feeding we just have to find a movement or bait or motion they will react to.
The down side of this past week was we had a lot of cloud cover and in the fall the sunny days are always the best. The clouds and rain is breaking up the thick grass and when we get through this cloudy pattern the bass will turn on and the good times should be here.
Most of my trips this week were in the mid part of the river, we worked everything from schooling fish with Pop-R's and slow lethargic fish with Mister Twister Comida's and found some fair activity on Secret Weapon buzz baits over the holes in the grass especially in the back waters. Most trips ended with 18 to 25 fish a day and some good size on hollow body rats over the thicker grass.
