As usual when I get really busy, it's both day and night charters... now that things have slowed down a bit it's time for a fishing report. The backcountry of Everglades National Park is very, very good now. Everthing's biting every day along the coast north and south of the Little Shark River and there's still plenty of fish in the interior as well. For those worrying about the snook population after last year's terrible cold weather fish kills, the fish in the interior and out on the coast are showing in good numbers - and they're really hungry. The night scene in the urban areas of Biscayne Bay is very good now as well. Our last trip fly fishing for the small tarpon resulted in six fish jumped and two to the boat on 8 and 9wt rods. That trip got cut short by motor trouble so all the action was in less than three hours....

Now for some photos - they'll tell the story better than I can....

We're still doing well on gag grouper up inside Gulf coast rivers, all on light rods and lures.

Image

Find the right creek mouth on a falling tide and no chum is needed. Spanish macks are still very hard on flies.

Image

Most of our slot sized reds that we've landed have come from Whitewater Bay. We're hooking them along the coast as well but hungry sharks make landing them really tough on the outside....

Image

This small tripletail came out from under a log in heavy cover. We'll see more and more of them all summer long in very shallow water....

Image

That same day this nice tarpon was the last fish of the day - up inside a small river along the coast. We're finding them every day....

Lots and lots of these along the coast now for catch and release - the much bigger ones release themselves in the heavy cover they're laying in....

Any snook or red along the coast has to be worked very aggressively now or a shark will surely get a meal. Some of the sharks are chasing fish all the back to the boat trying to make a meal of them (things get a bit exciting then...).

Tight lines

Bio: Capt. Bob LeMay began his south Florida fishing career almost thirty years ago. He has worked for area tackle shops, mated on charter boats, but the highlight of those early years was winning the Lauderdale Billfish Tournament in 1973 with two anglers who had never fished for billfish before!

By the end of the seventies he was guiding part-time and tying flies commercially. In 1995, he began guiding fulltime. Through Umpqua Feather Merchants his fly patterns are now sold in shops around the world and in catalogues like LL Bean and Westbank Anglers.
