Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak
Once is never enough – Dirk Schonenberg, who fished with us two days ago, after catching a Sailfish and a couple of Sharks, decided to charter the Happy Day Today again to do some off shore fishing. Mr. Schonenberg brought his partner and business associate from the Royal Van Lent Flagship Corporation.
We stopped to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Baits in the Fort Lauderdale inlet. Directly to the drop off we went, sitting in 180 ft. of water, we put two kites out, two live Goggle Eyes from each kite and one from the rigger. With seas running 6-10 ft., 20-25 mph winds from the northeast, made it for a sporting fishing day – a manly ocean day.
Our first fish came from our left long kite bait and wound up to be a 12 lb. Mahi Mahi. Form there we kept picking away at all good gaffers Mahi Mahi's. As I was focused on the live baits from the kites, a purple shadow appeared, swimming lethargically towards us. I positioned the live bait in front of him, and everyone on the boat could see the 100 lb. Swordfish just swimming 5 ft. from the live Goggle Eye, ignoring it. Other boats that were in the area also noticed him swimming away, uninterested. A splash appeared on the right long kite, lines screamed out and a large Bull Mahi Mahi came out of the water. We cleared the rest of the lines to work this fish. Sea conditions in the Mahi Mahi's favor, made it more difficult, but Dirk prevailed and brought the fish to the boat – a 26 lb. Mahi Mahi.
It was time to head back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
