Fishing P-town
By: Capt. Hap Farrell
It has been many years since I fished up by Long Point and Wood End off Provincetown. I've always found enough fish down by Billingsgate Shoals, or the Path, or the deep water off the shoals. Places like the New Grounds and the Brewster Flats have also produced all the bass I needed. Why deal with the crowds of boats, the lobster pots and the hang ups off the Bath House and near the Race?
Well, today was different. It started out with a foggy, drizzly northeast wind and no real fish on the shoals. Capt. Don Walwar, of the Terry II, had been up to P-town the day before and did very well, as we had done on the shoals. Today was different. No fish on the shoals so I took the ride. It was worth it. For one, there was less wind at Wood End, and second, the sun was breaking through. Best of all the bass were jumping in the boat. There were no crowds of small boats, no hang ups where we were, and as I said lots of fish.
I had what was a booth trip. A group which was assigned to me by a booking agent, Roxanne Hayes (508-255-9757), right at Rock Harbor. It was their first time with me. I wanted to make sure we got fish for them. It seems we did. Bill Jodice, who booked the trip brought along Paul, Brian, Kevin, Dan, and the fisherwoman of the group Jessie. They all did well and typically the only woman on the boat landed the largest bass running 38 inches and a heathy 20 pounds. Not a bad day fishing P-town.
